This Privacy Policy explains how the Pocket Tunes Android application ("Pocket Tunes", "the app", "we", "us") handles your information. By using the app, you agree to the practices described here.
1. Information we do not collect
Pocket Tunes has no user accounts. We do not collect, store, or transmit your name, email, contacts, or precise location. We never access, upload, or share your music files or playlists. We do not sell your personal information.
If you choose to give one contact their own ringtone, the app writes that single ringtone setting on the contact you pick in Android's contact picker. It does not read your address book, and no contact information leaves your device.
2. Crash reporting
To keep the app stable, Pocket Tunes uses Firebase Crashlytics, a crash-reporting service provided by Google. When the app crashes or hits a serious error, Crashlytics automatically sends an anonymous report. A report may include:
- the error type and stack trace;
- your device model, manufacturer, and Android version;
- the app version and build;
- the state of the app at the time of the crash (e.g. available memory);
- a randomly generated Crashlytics installation identifier and timestamps.
These reports do not contain your name, your music, your playlists, or any other personal content, and the data is used solely to diagnose and fix problems.
3. Usage analytics
Pocket Tunes uses Firebase Analytics, also provided by Google, to understand how the app is used so we know which features are worth improving. This is anonymous and aggregate. It records:
- which screens you open and how long a session lasts;
- basic events such as first launch and app updates;
- which features are used — for example that a playlist was created, the playback speed was changed, a ringtone was set, or a launcher shortcut was tapped — recorded as the feature and a small fixed setting (such as the speed or the tone type), never the item involved;
- your device model, Android version, app version, and country-level region derived from your IP address.
It does not record your advertising ID — analytics collection of the advertising ID is explicitly switched off in the app, and analytics data is kept separate from the advertising described in Section 4. It never records the names of your songs, playlists, contacts, or files, and screen reporting logs only the screen name (e.g. "NowPlaying"), never the item you opened.
Crash reporting and analytics are processed by Google on our behalf; see Google's Firebase Privacy and Security documentation and the Google Privacy Policy.
4. Advertising
Pocket Tunes is free and is supported by advertising. Banner ads appear between items in the Songs, Playlists, and Search lists. They are served by Google AdMob, a Google advertising service.
To select, deliver, and measure those ads, AdMob receives:
- your device's advertising ID (a resettable identifier Android provides for advertising, not tied to your name);
- your device model, manufacturer, Android version, and language;
- your approximate, country- or city-level location derived from your IP address;
- information about the ads shown to you — whether one was displayed, viewed, or tapped.
AdMob never receives your music, your playlists, your trimmed clips, the names of any files on your device, or the contents of any screen in the app. We do not send Google any information that identifies you personally, and we do not sell your data.
Google uses this information to select ads and to measure and prevent ad fraud, and may use it to show you personalised ads. How Google handles it is described in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services and the Google Privacy Policy.
Your choices. You can limit or reset this at any time from your device, without uninstalling the app. Android Settings › Privacy › Ads (the exact path varies by manufacturer) lets you delete or reset your advertising ID, and lets you opt out of ad personalisation. With the ID deleted, Pocket Tunes still shows ads, but they are not personalised.
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, the app asks for your consent before using your advertising ID, and you can change your answer at any time from Settings › Ad privacy inside the app.
5. Permissions we request and why
- Audio / media access (
READ_MEDIA_AUDIO): to find and play the music already on your device. - Notifications (
POST_NOTIFICATIONS): to show playback controls in the notification shade and on the lock screen. - Modify system settings (
WRITE_SETTINGS): only when you choose to set a song as your ringtone, notification, or alarm sound. - Contacts (
WRITE_CONTACTS): requested only when you choose to give one contact their own ringtone, and used only to save that ringtone on the contact you pick. The app does not read your contacts. - Internet / network state (
INTERNET,ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE): to load the ads described in Section 4, and to send the anonymous crash reports and usage analytics described above. - Advertising ID (
AD_ID, and the related Android Privacy Sandbox permissions): used by Google AdMob to serve and measure ads, as described in Section 4.
These permissions are used solely to make the app work and for no other purpose.
6. Where your content is stored
Everything you create stays on your device. Playlists, favourites, and how many times each song has been played are saved in the app's local database. Trimmed tones are saved into your device's standard Ringtones, Notifications, and Alarms folders, and saved clips and audio extracted from videos go into your Music folder. A video you pick to extract audio from is only read on your device; it is never uploaded or changed. Uninstalling the app removes its local data (clips you have exported into your sound folders remain, as they become part of your device's media).
7. Data sharing and selling
We do not sell your data. Data leaves your device in only three ways, all described above:
- anonymous crash diagnostics, processed by Google (Firebase Crashlytics) on our behalf;
- anonymous usage analytics, processed by Google (Firebase Analytics) on our behalf;
- the advertising information in Section 4, which is shared with Google AdMob and the advertising partners Google works with, for the purpose of selecting and measuring ads.
8. Data retention
Crash reports are retained by Firebase Crashlytics for a limited period (by default up to 90 days) and are then automatically deleted. Analytics data is retained by Firebase for the period configured in the Firebase console (by default up to 14 months) and is then automatically deleted. Advertising data is retained by Google according to its own policies; see the Google Privacy Policy linked in Section 4. Content stored on your device is retained until you delete it or uninstall the app.
9. Children's privacy
Pocket Tunes is a general-audience music player and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The app is not enrolled in Google Play's Designed for Families programme, and its ads are not served under child-directed treatment.
10. Security
Your music, playlists, and clips never leave your device, so there is very little data to expose. Crash reports, analytics, and ad requests are all transmitted to Google over encrypted connections.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with a new "Last updated" date, and, where appropriate, noted in the app.
